Today’s Glendale is a planned urban space with a wide array of high rises and other commercial buildings. It’s quite different from the wide open spaces found by William John Murphy in the late 1800s.
As an Arizona Canal contractor, he helped move water through the area to Phoenix. He saw the benefits it could bring to farmers, and he bought land to establish a town. Today hIs Glendale residence is on the National Register, and the downtown Murphy Park bears his name.
A recent count shows the nearby Air Force Base has some 22,000 residents. The city’s close proximity to a major military base has contributed to its growth over the years, but a diverse economy ensures a wide array of employment opportunities for its residents.
In 1940, land was $1 an acre. There were large flat open areas where runways would be easy to construct. It’s no wonder the US Army chose the area to place a training camp for pilots during World War II.
Luke Air Field was built just 7 miles from the original downtown. When World War II ended, the field went on to become Luke Air Force Base. The city’s proximity to this aviation hub has attracted other aviation and aerospace contractors over the years.

Unique Aspects of Glendale Living
The State Farm Stadium in Glendale adds professional football to the city’s list of important achievements. When the NFL Arizona Cardinals aren’t playing, there may be other events at the stadium or at the Gila River Arena.
These modern sports facilities haven’t pushed out Glendale’s other claim to fame.The town is known as Arizona’s Antique Capital. A visitor can see for themselves in the ten-block historic downtown where antique stores abound.
Some Craftsman bungalows are used as shops, preserving this architecture of the 1920s and 1930s. You will also find the area’s first subdivision, known as Catlin Court.
The unique Xeriscape Botanical Garden is next door to the library. This four-acre demonstration garden boasts 400 varieties of desert plants. At the Sahuaro Ranch, visitors can tour the historic area with its original buildings, rose garden, orchards, and peacocks.
If it’s March, it’s time to head to a Cactus League stadium to see pro baseball in spring training. Living in Glendale, we have access to 15 Major League Baseball teams at ten stadiums across the Phoenix metro area.
Scenic Drives in Your New Ford
For a closer look at the desert, you can head west to the White Tank Regional Park. Not only is this the largest park in the county, it’s the largest of its kind in both the state and the country.
Visitors can witness the remarkable diversity found in some 30,000 acres of the Sonoran Desert. On the Waterfall Trail, you can see the ancient drawings at Petroglyph Plaza. It’s a reminder of the Hohokam people who were living there from 500 to 900 CE.
In a new Ford, you’ll want to go further and see more. You may be ready to drive up to the Grand Canyon or over to the Painted Desert. The Petrified Forest loop rim and many interesting stops are a great way to spend the day. When you are tired, automatic climate controls and driver assistance features make life easier.
Sedona is another favorite destination. Just a few hours away, you can take the scenic Red Rock road from the Interstate and enjoy views that draw visitors from across the country and the world. The Oak Creek Canyon road from Sedona to Flagstaff offers views of one of the deepest and most beautiful aspects of Arizona geography.
If you want your scenic drive to be educational, there are so many native sites to visit. The most beautiful is probably Montezuma Castle National Monument. It’s easily accessed off of I-17.
From there you can drive to the Tuzigoot National Monument in about 30 minutes. If you head toward Flagstaff, you can see the remarkable cliff dwellings preserved at the Walnut Canyon National Monument.
